Aspen Snowmass ski resorts asked my company to design and build four identical carts used to serve coffee and hot chocolate on the ski slope.Â
As the Design Engineer I had a few large constraints to work around: the final products had to be food safe, able to last 10 seasons, have a roof, have a trash can integrated, and be on a tight budget. This was a lot to design around but eventually I decided to use a preassembled food safe cart that I would modify. Once I had the carts to visualize I then modeled them and made the necessary adjustments to meet client spec. Then I went back and forth with a local metal shop on how they could best manufacture these changes, and creating a finalized drawing packet to full ASME requirements. After manufacturing there were a few additional pieces I had to add to the carts in-house, including a full vinyl wrap, holders for the trash cans, and an aluminum roof. I engineered, and added all of these by hand. Finally I delivered these to Aspen and the ski resort was thrilled. On a later trip to the town I saw one holding up to the weather with people getting their coffee from it.
Below are a few photos of the finished result, and the design to get there.
